'One problem with Alan Ashton-Jeanes's novel Autography is discussing it without appearing to quote from it. Or so its first sentence claims, wholly accurately, so far. Here, helping us depart from the script, we do not, in fact, have a renowned antipodean professor, Frances Farra, and bestselling author and columnist, Patrick Hattrick.
'"Patrick", what do you make of Autography?'
'Well, it's certainly easy to become confused by the levels of self-reference, but I think Ashton-Jeanes is right, "in the end, that it hardly matters." I found myself gradually drifting away from a fairly rigid narrative mindset, where you, as the reader, keep track of who's saying what, and beginning to glimpse the thought processes in my head "dancing cheek-to-cheek with the author".'
'Well that's right!' "Frances" continues. 'Fundamentally it's a whodunnit without an "it", where "who" is: you!'
